Why it matters

A five-question filter your teen runs in their head before posting anything — about permanence, audience, other people in the shot, mood, and whether tomorrow-them would post it. You go through the five together once, your teen reorders them by what matters most to them, and the tool prints a small card-sized version that lives wherever they'll see it. The questions are written in a teen's voice ('Would I be fine with this on the gym wall?'), not a legal disclaimer's. The goal isn't fear of posting — it's the three-second pause that catches the one post a year that actually matters.

The tool

A wallet-size printable of the five-question filter, ordered by your teen.

Key points

  • Five questions, three seconds — a pause, not a lecture.
  • Mood check matters: angry posts are the regretted ones.
  • Let your teen reorder the questions so the standard is theirs.

The science

Digital-footprint research shows deleted content routinely survives through screenshots, caches, and re-shares — the technical reality behind 'the internet is forever.' Impulse-posting tracks with mood: posts made angry, hurt, or late at night are disproportionately the regretted ones, which is why a mood question belongs in the filter. Implementation-intention research shows a rehearsed if-then check ('before I post, I ask…') actually fires in the moment, where vague cautions don't. And involving the teen in ordering the questions converts a parental rule into a personal standard — the only kind that operates when no one's watching.
